LIFESTYLE sessions are perfect for any genre of photography, including family portraits, family travel photography, local Vancouver and Destination weddings or other special occasions.
Our Lifestyle photography sessions are on-location shootings – either in your home, backyard, or just a walk down the street. There are also plenty of options in a park or at the beach.
Not sure where you would like to do the shoot? I can suggest some places that work well for the time you plan your session.
IN YOUR HOME
It's best when there is lots of natural light as I usually turn all the artificial lights off in the room we are shooting in, this will give you softer and more natural-looking photographs. It can be anytime during the day, bigger rooms often work better like the master bedroom and the living area, but often children’s bedrooms and the kitchen can work well too. We will decide together on the best room and light in our pre-consultation meeting. For very grey days, which we often have during the Wintertime in Vancouver, I will bring some portable professional "daylight" fixtures to complement the existing daylight.
OUTDOORS
The Best light conditions for outdoor sessions are the early evening or first thing in the morning, while the light is warm and the shadows are soft. Those few hours before sunset and after sunrise, are magical. However, I also have shot outdoors during other times of the day. We just need to find the right spot for the time of the day. You should plan your outdoor session as a Family Play Date so may bring a ball or the favourite game for the kids, a cozy blanket, water if anybody gets thirsty or even some snacks, I do recommend pre-cut easy to eat finger food.
WHAT TO DO
Lifestyle sessions are natural sessions where happenings grow organically, and I can capture the essence of your family – natural interactions, laughter, love and connection. Most importantly, don’t look at the camera and say cheese. Great ways to get your family to relax and have fun during the shoot are tickles, silly jokes, piggyback rides and secret whispers. Nothing should be forced, just be together as a family.
PRE-CONSULTATION
Anybody interested in a Session will receive a free pre-consultation, where I like to get to know your family so our session time together will be enjoyable and relaxed for all family members. During this meeting, I like to introduce myself and my camera, so you get used to us. I like to snap a few photos and show these to you at the back screen of the camera, which is a great hit, especially for young children or the more self-conscious teenager.
WHAT TO WEAR
I want to capture the unique story of your family, so your cloth should be comfortable, and you should look like yourself. That said, I would not recommend dressing up if you feel comfortable in Jeans and a T-shirt or if you all love to dress up a bit, then just do so. However, it is good to think about how your family will look together and plan your outfits a few days before the shoot.
It would be great to wear some coordinating colours as this will bring things together visually. May choose two or three main colours for your wardrobes. Solid, neutral colours and earth tones with a pop of colour tend to work well. I would leave patterns and bolder tones for the youngest and smallest person to bring up a bit more attention to them. Please avoid large logos and busy graphics as they will be distracting from your faces.
One last tip dress for the weather, it is no fun if anybody is shivering or sweating. Best is to bring a few combinations of layers and don't forget accessories, like sunglasses, hat's scarfs, belt's.... personal items that bring out your character.
Newborn Sessions
are the only Photography sessions where I recommend to keep the wardrobe super simple. Best are lighter natural colours like warm white, cream, grey or beige, or any light and muted colours, and for the dad washed out jeans look great with your baby's skin.
Need some help choosing your wardrobe?
I have a stylist working with me, which can advise you with it during our consultation session for an extra fee.
