Pale Silence explores the forest at the threshold of visibility, where subdued light softens contrast and separates the trees into pale vertical forms. Created through controlled camera movement, detail recedes and the woodland becomes a composition of tone, space, and quiet repetition. The restrained palette gives the photograph an unusual openness, allowing atmosphere to become as important as the trees themselves.

About the Photograph
Pale Silence was photographed in North Vancouver under subdued woodland light, at a moment when contrast had nearly disappeared from the scene. With fewer visual distinctions between trunk, background, and atmosphere, the forest began to feel less like a collection of individual trees and more like a sequence of tones.
Camera movement softened the remaining detail while preserving the vertical structure of the woodland. Within Sylvan, Pale Silence is one of the series’ most reduced studies, an exploration of how little visual information is needed for the presence of the forest to remain.
